Leakages in India's Poverty Alleviation Program
The road out of poverty is rarely a smooth, one-way street. Many people rise above the poverty line only to tumble back below it📉
Some of the leakages in India's Poverty Alleviation Programmes are-
- Insufficient allocation to programmes when compared to the magnitude of Poverty in India.
- Fiscal crisis faced by Government resulting in lower spending on social sectors.
- Focus on IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION rather than creating sustainable employment opportunity.
- Less dispersed agricultural growth.
- Targeted public distribution system unable to reach the poorest.
- Procedure to avail benefits involves the production of several documents, certificates and proofs.
- Rigidity and Non-adaptability to Local Conditions.
- A Decline in Employment Intensity.
- Inactive Social Intermediation (Self Help Groups)
- Lack of awareness about Welfare Schemes and available Legal remedies.
- Funds went in the pockets of corruption, middlemen, etc.
Despite reducing poverty from 55% (1973-74) to around 21% (2019-20), India cannot entirely eradicate poverty without addressing Chronic Poverty and its Reasons.
